Hepatitis B vaccination

High risk individuals include:

  • End stage renal disease (ESRD) patients
  • Hemophiliacs who receive Factor VIII or IX concentrates
  • Clients of institutions for the mentally retarded
  • Persons who live in the same household as a hepatitis B virus carrier
  • Homosexual men
  • Illicit injectable drug abusers
  • Persons diagnosed with diabetes mellitus

Individuals at intermediate risk include:

  • Staff in institutions for the mentally retarded
  • Workers in health care professions who have frequent contact with blood or blood-derived body fluids during routine work

 

Medicare beneficiaries who are currently positive for antibodies for hepatitis B are not eligible for this benefit.

The patient’s deductible and coinsurance are waived for the vaccine and administration.

Medicare pays an additional payment for in-home hepatitis B shot administration under certain circumstances.

A physician's order is no longer required for the administration of a hepatitis B shot.
