Hepatitis B vaccination
High risk individuals include:
- End stage renal disease (ESRD) patients
- Hemophiliacs who receive Factor VIII or IX concentrates
- Clients of institutions for the mentally retarded
- Persons who live in the same household as a hepatitis B virus carrier
- Homosexual men
- Illicit injectable drug abusers
- Persons diagnosed with diabetes mellitus
Individuals at intermediate risk include:
- Staff in institutions for the mentally retarded
- Workers in health care professions who have frequent contact with blood or blood-derived body fluids during routine work
Medicare beneficiaries who are currently positive for antibodies for hepatitis B are not eligible for this benefit.
The patient’s deductible and coinsurance are waived for the vaccine and administration.
Medicare pays an additional payment for in-home hepatitis B shot administration under certain circumstances.
A physician's order is no longer required for the administration of a hepatitis B shot.
