First Coast’s E/M interactive worksheet updates: Verify your E/M code selection
Effective January 1, 2023, CMS adopted many of the American Medical Association (AMA) CPT Editorial Board’s updates to evaluation and management (E/M) coding guidelines for “other” E/M visits. In response, First Coast updated our E/M interactive worksheet to assist with verification of E/M services for office and outpatient as well as “other” E/M visits impacted by the 2023 updates including hospital inpatient and observation, emergency department, nursing facility and home or residence services.
First Coast’s E/M interactive worksheet will assist with verifying proper code selection of these types of service, applying the new guidelines including time and medical decision-making as the components used for determining these levels of service.
The worksheet allows direct access to the AMA medical decision making (MDM) table, with separate review and selection of the three elements to determine a level of MDM:
- Number and complexity of problems addressed at the encounter
- Amount and/or complexity of data to be reviewed and analyzed
- Risk of complications and/or morbidity or mortality of patient management
Separately, you can also enter time associated with the encounter, either in increments or as a total amount, with a corresponding code determined via the worksheet.
Overall, this is a useful tool for auditing, training, and code verification purposes, and can be accessed at First Coast E/M interactive worksheet. Check it out!
