Cardiology - additional resources
Listed below are additional resources identified specifically for cardiology:
First Coast resources
- View recently released articles on billing and coverage of cardiac services from the First Coast Medicare website.
- Preventive benefits
- Rural health (including telehealth benefits)
CMS resources
- Visit the Physician center on the CMS website.
- Beneficiary notices - Both Medicare beneficiaries and providers have certain rights and protections related to financial liability under the Medicare program. These financial liability and appeal rights and protections are communicated to beneficiaries through notices given by providers.
- Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) - Congress passed the CLIA in 1988 establishing quality standards for all laboratories testing to ensure the accuracy, reliability and timeliness of patient test results, regardless of where the test was performed. The CLIA regulations are based on the complexity of the test method; thus, the more complicated the test, the more stringent the requirements.
- Clinical trials, approved facilities and registries
- CMS conditions for coverage (CfCs) and conditions of participation (CoPs) - CMS develops these health and safety standards that health care organizations must meet in order to begin and continue participating in the Medicare and Medicaid programs, including organ procurement organizations (OPOs) and transplant centers.
- ICD-10 resources for specialties and selected health conditions and services
- New physician specialty code for advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology, medical toxicology, and hematopoietic cell transplantation and cellular therapy - CR9957
- Quality incentives and innovation models
- Million hearts: Cardiovascular disease risk reduction model - This model is a randomized controlled trial that seeks to bridge a gap in cardiovascular care by providing targeted incentives for health care practitioners to engage in beneficiary CVD risk calculation and population-level risk management.
- Telehealth services - Medicare pays for a limited number of Part B services furnished by a physician or practitioner to an eligible beneficiary via telecommunications system. Some services provided under this specialty can be provided via telehealth. View this booklet for more information on eligible services. (ICN 901705)

- American College of Cardiology - National Cardiovascular Data Registry (ACC-NCDR)
- Medicare provides coverage for implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) for certain clinical indications. As described in the NCD, indications for the primary prevention of sudden cardiac arrest require that data be reported on patients receiving ICDs. On October 27, 2005, CMS announced that the American College of Cardiology's National Cardiovascular Data Registry (ACC-NCDR) ICD Registry satisfies the data reporting requirements in the NCD. Detailed descriptions of the covered indications are available in the national coverage determination (NCD) for Implantable automatic defibrillators (IADs) (20.4).
