Prior authorization request for certain hospital OPD services
CMS implemented a prior authorization (PA) program for certain hospital OPD services for dates of service on or after July 1, 2020, nationwide. CMS believes prior authorization for certain hospital OPD services will ensure that Medicare beneficiaries continue to receive medically necessary care while protecting the Medicare Trust Fund from improper payments and keeping the medical necessity documentation requirements unchanged for providers.
For details, links, and submission guidelines refer to PA program for certain hospital OPD services.
- Be sure to include the Prior Authorization Request coversheet and supporting medical documentation with your request and follow the instructions for completing the coversheet:
- Do not use the expedited prior authorization request coversheet unless the normal timeframe for a decision notification could jeopardize the life or health of the beneficiary. If the medical records submitted with the expedited request do not justify an expedited request, then the request will be subject to the normal process and timeframes.
